I had the chance to voice a small football-commentary style part in Netflix’s indie superhero film iBoy. It’s only a blink-and-you’ll-miss-me moment, but great fun to do and another quirky addition to the growing list of football commentator voiceovers I seem to attract.
It always makes me laugh that I don’t actually watch football, yet I’m forever booked for football commentator-style voiceovers. Even ITV once asked me to voice the promo for a new series of Play to the Whistle, which turned out really well.
My commentary work now includes jobs for Betfred, Just Eat UEFA, Pizza Hut, Manchester City, and even international brands like Turkish Airlines. Not bad for someone who doesn’t follow football.
It was another voiceover friend who told me I’d ended up commentating on Spurs and Man U in this Netflix film. I didn’t even realise at the time!
If you haven’t seen it, iBoy follows Tom, a teenager whose life changes after an encounter with local thugs leaves smartphone fragments embedded in his brain. After waking from a coma, he discovers he has strange new powers and sets out for revenge, along with trying to protect his friend Lucy.
It’s a gritty, clever British sci-fi film, and it was fun to provide a little moment of commentary within it. Another unusual gig to add to the ever-growing football commentary list.
If you’re working on a promo, trailer, sketch, or commercial and need a fast, energetic football commentator style, feel free to get in touch. I can send a short sample before you book me. Just send over a few lines of script and I’ll record something so you know I’m the right fit.
You can also hear more examples on my main football commentator voiceover page, which includes global brands, UEFA campaigns, comedy reads, and more.
